Life and Education:

Dasho Karma Ura was born in Ura, Bumthang, the northern part of Bhutan. After the high school, Karma studied at St. Stephen college of Delhi University for his undergraduate and graduate at Magdalen College of Oxford. Finally, Karma completed his postgraduate from Edinburgh University in the United Kingdom.

Work and Achievement:

Karma Ura is the President of the Centre for Bhutan Studies and GNH Research (Thimphu, Bhutan). He worked for the Bhutan National Ministry of Planning for 12 years. He initiated to organise the concepts of Gross National Happiness (GNH), formulated the nine regions of GNH, and led the survey conducted in 2010 and 2007 in Bhutan.

He is also a member drafting the first Constitution of Bhutan 2008, which became the landmark change in Bhutanese history. In 1999, he became the Director of the Centre for Bhutan Studies, and later he became the president of the organisation.

Along with these works, Karma holds numerous international positions, including; Executive Committee Member of the School of Well-being, Chulalongkorn University, and San Nagarprada Foundation, Thailand, and 2010~ Member of the Reflection Group on Global Development Perspectives, Global Policy Forum, Germany. He is also the Member of the Chief Economist’s Advisory Panel, South Asia Region, World Bank.

In 2006, he was awarded the ancient and well-known title of “Dasho” by His Majesty, the 4th Druk Gyalpo. In 2010, he was bestowed with the title “Druk Khorlo” by His Majesty, the 5th King. He is also a famous painter in both in tradition as well in contemporary art. His paintings can be seen in the renowned iconic Dochula Temple and other places.

His Scholarly Works:

He has been an active scholar, historian, and writer. He has authored several books such as

  • Faith and Festival of Nimalung
  • Deities and Archers
  • The Hero with a Thousand Eyes
  • Ballad of Pemi Tshewang Tashi
  • Leadership of the Wise: Kings of Bhutan

and so on. He has contributed articles to numerous books and journals. He has participated in many international conferences all around the world as keynote speakers.
