Oxford Summer School of Himalayan Languages

 

Hindi, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese, Ladakhi, Nepali, Dzongkha, Mongolian

 

Based in the famous university city of Oxford, The Himalayan Initiatives(THI) summer school runs eight different Himalayan Language classes for beginners and intermediate level. We have native language teachers and instructors who have many years of language teaching experience. Due to the COVID 19, instead of taking place in Oxford, the courses will be delivered online this year. Our classes are designed for both academic and non-academic language learners.

Class Outline:

  • Classes are taking place from August 9- August 27 2021
  • In total three weeks(Monday to Friday); two classes each day and each class will last for an hour
  • Seminar talks are given by experts on a range of topics related to India, Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh, Tibet, Mongolia and China
  • Language materials will be provided along with further language study guidance
  • Small group class of 6-8 students, fun and friendly

Cost for per language class: £ 350  

  • Special offer: £300 for first 15 applicants

Beginners Course

This course is designed for students with zero or little language learning. Teaching methods include interactive, communication-based activities and real-life role-plays for a stimulating, immersive learning experience. This course covers the language alphabet, basic grammar, and essential vocabulary.

By the end of this course, students should:

  • be familiar with alphabets, consonants, and vowel combinations
  • be able to read simple sentences
  • be able to produce some simple phrases

Intermediate Course

This course is designed for students with considerable knowledge of the language. Teaching methods include interactive, reading different texts, sharping communication skills. This course covers sophisticated language skills in reading and translation, useful idioms and proverbs.

By the end of this course, students should:

  • be able to read/translate simple texts with proper comprehension
  • be able to communicate with people in everyday situations
  • be able to write simple paragraphs and diaries

Seminar Talks

Targeting summer school students, we have a series of distinguished seminar talks on various topics, including Himalayan history, culture, language, and art, given by well-known scholars, professionals, and artists.

  • There are eight seminar talks, and each of them lasts for 45 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of Q/A session.
  • Every after seminar talk, there is social interaction session (sometimes fun Quiz sessions )  among students and language instructors to build a network with each other.

Our Language Instructors

Danzhen Yangjin
Chinese Language Instructor

She is a PhD scholar at the University of Edinburgh, born and grew up in Beijing, China. Danzhen did her higher studies at the best National University in China. She is an award-winning writer in Chinese and has been teaching Chinese and tutoring other subjects for many years.

Konchok Nyima
Ladakhi Language Instructor

Born and educated in Ladakh, Konchok is a PhD scholar of philosophy in Humanities and Social Science Studies from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India. He has been researching Buddhist Epistemology and also working as an teaching assistant at his university. He has many years of experience in teaching the Ladakhi language to foreigners and scholars.

E.Munkhtsetseg
Mongolian Language Instructor

She is a PhD scholar and associate professor at the Institute of Language and Literature, Mongolian Academy of Sciences. She did her BA and MA in Mongolian Universities. She completed her PhD at St. Petersburg State University in Russia. She has more than 20 years of Mongolian language teaching experience to Mongolian and Yakut students. For the last three years, she has been teaching at the Buryat State University summer school in Russia.

Shanta Kumar Negi
Hindi and Sanskrit language instructor

He is PhD and scholar at the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies in Ladakh. He is also a specialised Sanskrit expert at the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi (Deemed University). He completed his higher studies in Hindi and Sanskrit at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Varanasi, India. In 2019, he was invited to the University of Oxford as a traditional scholar. He has been teaching Hindi and Sanskirt for many years.

Jangchub Woeser
Nepali Language Instructor

He is a research scholar at the Lumbini Buddhist University. He did his studies at many prestigious Nepali schools and academic institutes. After his formal studies, Jangchub became a monk and studied Buddhism for 12 years in Trugram Monastery at Kathmandu. He has many years of experience in teaching the Nepali language to foreigners and research scholars.

Adella
Chinese Language Instructor

She is a specialised Mandarin teacher, teaching Mandarin to foreigners for many years. Along with her main profession, she has also been teaching traditional Chinese music for years. She did her BA at the Harbin Normal University in China and MSc at the Aberdeen University of Scotland, UK. Currently, she is the head office of ILLuminate Tuition School (ITS) and Hua Fu International Education (HFIE) in China.

Darig Thokmay
Tibetan Language Instructor

He is a PhD candidate at the University of Oxford and currently working on Asian history. He has been tutoring and instructing various topics of Tibetan and Himalayan studies. He was educated and trained at traditional Tibetan study centres and also modern universities in several countries including India, Japan, Poland and the UK.

Tenzin Choephel
Tibetan Language Instructor

Choephel is a specialised Tibetan language instructor and translator. He taught at SOAS and the University of Oxford, UK. He has published his own Tibetan language teaching book, and his translation works at several platforms. He studied at the University of Oxford and the top traditional Tibetan studies centres in India. Currently, he is the CEO of Easy Tibetan.

Sonam Angmo
Ladakhi Language Instructor

She is a PsyD student at the University of St. Mary in the United States. Born in Ladakh, she accomplished her high school studies in Hindi and Ladakhi languages. She did her degree studies at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Denmark and St. Olaf College, Northfield, the US. She has been teaching Hindi and Ladakhi to foreigners and international students for many years. She is trilingual and worked as a language resource coordinator at World Language Centre, Northfield, the US.

Tenzin Namgyel
Dzongkha Language Instructor

He is a Dzongkha language instructor for international students studying at RTC, along with his main responsibility as an International Relations Officer at the Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan. Tenzin was educated and trained at the top-notched schools and universities, including Royal Thimphu College in Bhutan and acquired special skills to teach the Dzongkha language to foreigners and international students
